The Awe of Cinema - Back to the Future

Cinema is built to inspire awe:the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your current understanding of the world” - Dacher Keltner.

From the larger than life screens with spectacle, grandeur and metaphor to the roaring sounds and well-placed moments of silence, our favorite films overwhelm, delight and evoke our emotions.

Great Scott!

Back to the Future celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2025. One of the remarkable qualities of the beloved film is the way it plays to new generations. If you haven’t yet, try pulling your kids or grandkids off their devices long enough to give Marty McFly’s journey a try. The humor, energy and awe of time travel still works.

Here are five epic moments from that ground-breaking film that continue leave audiences marveling at the ingenuity, emotion, and spectacle of the film:

1. The DeLorean Reveal

It’s a great big yes, and: Doc Brown says: “The way I see it, if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” The stainless-steel car emerges from the smoke and sparks, its futuristic gull-wing doors opening, leaving Marty's jaw on the asphalt of the Twin Pines Mall.

2. Marty’s First Time Jump

This isn’t all just some fun joy ride - this thing is nuclear! Doc is shot by terrorists for deceiving them to get the uranium he needs for fuel. Marty accidentally activates the time machine while fleeing Libyan terrorists, catapulting himself from 1985 to 1955 in a dazzling display of light, fire trails, and electricity.

3. Marty meets his mom and dad…as teenagers

So there are problems here - dad’s a helpless (peeping Tom!) nerd and mom has an unexpectedly high libido…for Marty (her son!).

4. Marty shreds Enchantment Under the Sea

George and Lorraine kiss. The day is saved. But Marty can’t help but take one last moment to rock out with the electric guitar in his hands. Awe takes a different form in the dumbstruck looks on the faces of the band and students.

5. The Clock Tower Lightning Strike

Marty and Doc solve the impossible through yes, and again! Uranium is even harder to come by in 1955, meaning they need to know the exact time and place lightning will strike.

Join us as we take the next step on this film’s awesome journey through our Cinema Therapy class: Taking Parkinson’s Back to the Future. Over the course of 16 weeks, meeting online once per week, we’ll explore, discover and create our own journeys into the impossible. Class starts on Monday, Jan. 27 at 12 noon pacific.
